Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 720G was released in January 2020 and MediaTek recently released a new SOC for mid-range 4G smartphones called Helio G95. This new SoC offers GPU improvements over the predecessor Helio G90T. MediaTek’s latest Helio G95 SoC can be compared to Qualcomm’s 700 series SOCs. We have already compared Helio G95 with Snapdragon 730G and 732G.
So, in this article, we are going to see how Helio G95 compares to the Snapdragon 720G in terms of CPU, GPU, memory, camera, display, modem, AI, and Benchmark. Realme 7 comes with Helio G95 while smartphones Poco M2 Pro, Redmi Note 9 Pro, Realme 6 Pro, etc. are equipped with a Snapdragon 720G chipset. So, without further ado, let’s see how they stack up against each other.
Comparison between Snapdragon 720G and Helio G95
Manufacturing process Helio G95 is made with the 12nm node from TMSC, while Snapdragon 720G was made with the 8nm node. This makes 720G SoC more efficient compared to Helio G95 by 4nm margin.
CPU
In Helio G95 we can see 8 processor cores. Out of these 8 processor cores, 2 cores are Cortex A76 clocked at 2.05 GHz and the other 6 cores are Cortex A55 clocked at 2 GHz. The Snapdragon 720G, on the other hand, is also an octa-core chip, just like the Helio G95. Of these 8 processor cores, 2 cores are Kryo 465 Performance cores (Cortex A76 based) clocked at 2.3 GHz and the other 6 cores are Kryo 465 Efficiency cores (Cortex A55 based) clocked at 1.8 GHz.
GPU
We see Arm Mali-G76 MC4 GPU in Helio G95 with maximum frequency of 900 MHz. It supports video playback and encoding at 30 fps in 4k, 120 fps in FHD, and 240 fps in HD. Whereas Snapdragon 720G has an Adreno 618 GPU clocked at 750 MHz; it supports OpenCL 2.0 FP, OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.1 API. We see a higher GPU frequency with Helio G95 (+150 MHz on 720G), which suggests that “Helio G95 offers better GPU performance compared to 720G”.
Memory
Helio G95 supports 2x LPDDR4x RAM up to 10 GB at 2133 MHz and supports eMMC 5.1 and UFS 2.1. While Snapdragon 720G supports 2x LPDDR4x RAM up to 8GB at 1866MHz and supports eMMC and UFS 2.1.
Camera
Helio G95 can support 24MP + 16MP, 48MP, 64MP / Quad cameras. It has 3X ISP which supports AI face detection, Roller shutter compensation motor (RSC), HW depth motor, AINR, Material deformation motor (EIS), single / double cam bokeh, MEMA 3DNR and multi-frame noise reduction. On the other hand, Snapdragon 720G has Qualcomm Spectra 350L Dual 14 bit ISP. It supports single camera up to 192 MP or single camera up to 32 MP with MFNR, ZSL, 30 fps. We have dual camera support up to 16 MP with MFNR, ZSL, 30 fps. It includes HEIF and HEIC photo capture.
Display
The Helio G95’s display supports 2520 x 1080 pixels at 90 Hz. While the Snapdragon 720G display supports 2520 x 1080 pixels at 90 Hz / 120 Hz with HDR 10 for the internal panel (up to at 10-bit color depth).
Modem (connectivity)
Helio G95 has a Cat-12 4G LTE WorldMode modem with features like 4X4 MIMO, 3XCA, 256QAM, TAS 2.0, HPUE, IMS (VoLTE \ ViLTE \ WoWi-Fi), eMBMS, Dual 4G VoLT and Band 71. While Snapdragon 720G has Qualcomm’s X15 LTE Modem with LTE Cat 15 up to 800Mbps for DL, 3 × 20MHz carrier aggregation and LTE Cat 13 up to 150Mbps for UL, 2 × 20MHz carrier aggregation.
For other connectivity, Helio G95 has built-in dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (a / b / g / n / ac), Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, FM radio. Snapdragon 720G supports GP, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, QZSS and SBAS. In addition, it supports NavIC; Indian satellite system to track location faster and more accurately.
AI
Helio G95 doesn’t provide its AI specs, it just says it has AI Accelerator. Where Snapdragon 720G has a 5th generation Qualcomm AI engine. This engine includes Qualcomm Kryo 465 processor, Adreno 618 GPU, Tensor Hexagon accelerator, detection center, hexagonal scalar accelerator and Hexagon 692 processor.
What is the best?
From our “Snapdragon 720G vs Helio G90T” article, we know that in the Antutu benchmark test, Helio G90T has a 1.35% advantage over the Snapdragon 720G. As Helio G95 is an overclocked version of the Helio G90T, So Helio G95 is clearly the winner.
When it comes to Antutu scores, the Helio G95 chipset equipped with Realme 7 scored 3.02,716 points in Antutu. On the other hand, according to the attached Youtube video on our “720G vs 730G” article, Qualcomm’s 720G chipset managed to score 2.81.066 points in Antutu.
